No. 20 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Splits on Final Day in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla., August 28, 2021 – The No. 20-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team will head back home on a positive note, as they finished off their weekend at the Florida SouthWestern State Battle at the Beach tournament with a win on Saturday. The Mustangs opened Saturday with a three-set loss to Daytona State College, but rebounded to defeat Indian River State College in four frames to wrap things up. Monroe heads home with a 7-3 overall record on the young season.
 
MATCH 1: Daytona State 3, #20 Monroe 0 (27-25, 25-17, 26-24)
The Mustangs battled a tough Daytona State team in their first match of the day, twice needing extra points for a set to be decided, but Monroe ultimately fell in three sets the start the day.
 
Yaliancis Flores and Leanisse Solano continued a productive weekend in Saturday's opener. Flores led the team with 12 kills, while Solano was next with 10. Each of them contributed seven digs apiece. Alisha Callender kept her double-double streak going with 13 assists and 21 digs, adding six kills and two aces as well. Lyanis Rios handed out a team-high 22 assists and served up three aces. Laura Paniagua led the way with 32 digs in the match.
 
MATCH 2: #20 Monroe 3, Indian River 1 (25-18, 32-34, 25-21, 25-18)
The Mustangs played well to pick up the win in the first set in Saturday's finale. They then had a long back-and-forth in the second set that resulted in a 34-32 win for Indian River. The Mustangs regrouped to pick up the third set before a strong fourth frame to close out the match and finish off the weekend with a win.
 
Callender narrowly missed her first triple-double of the season, finishing with 11 kills, 22 assists and eight digs in the win. Solano and Flores each had double-doubles in the contest. Solano produced 15 kills and 14 digs, while Flores contributed 15 kills and 12 digs. Paniagua joined the club with 10 assists and a team-best 21 digs. Rios added 16 assists and nine digs. Daina Monroe made five blocks in the match, while Callender had four blocks of her own.
 
The Mustangs now head back to New York, and will play next on Wednesday, Sept. 1, when they host Sarah Lawrence College at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
