Monroe Mustangs Softball Drops Two at Suffolk

SELDEN, N.Y., April 14, 2021 – The Monroe College Mustangs softball team fell twice at against Suffolk County Community College Wednesday afternoon. The Mustangs fall to 2-10 overall, while the Sharks improve to 9-3.
 
GAME 1: Suffolk 10, Monroe 0 (5 INN)
Wednesday's opener got off to a rough start, and the Mustangs were unable to catch up. The Sharks scored three in the bottom of the first, and then added another run in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Another run scored in the third, and then a five-run fourth eventually ended the game via run-rule.
 
Mya Jack and Angelina Perez each hit 1-for-2 in the game for the Mustangs.
 
GAME 2: Suffolk 15, Monroe 1 (5 INN)
Unfortunately, it was much of the same in Game 2 on Wednesday. The Sharks put up nine runs in the bottom of the first to take a sizeable lead early, adding another five in the second. The Mustangs got a run in the top of the third when Jack attempted a suicide squeeze. The throw went home, but Brenda Rodriguez beat it out for Monroe's only run of the game. The Sharks got one more in the fourth to reach the eventual 15-1 final.
 
Jack went 1-for-2 once again in Game 2, this time adding an RBI. Rodriguez hit 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
 
The Mustangs and Sharks will play twice more on Friday, April 16, back out in Selden, N.Y. Game 1 is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 17 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
