Monroe Mustangs Men’s Basketball Defeats Monroe Community College in Return to the MAC

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., December 11, 2021 – In the final game of the first day of the Monroe College Men's & Women's Mixer at the Monroe Athletic Complex, the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team took down Monroe Community College, 91-67. The Mustangs improve to 10-3 overall, while the Tribunes drop to 2-7.
 
Saturday's contest got off to a back-and-forth start. The Mustangs started to pull away with an 8-0 run that put them up, 13-6, but the Tribunes bounced back to tie it up at 15-15. The game was knotted up at 23-23 before the Mustangs caught fire, going on a 14-1 run to go up, 37-24, with 7:09 on the clock. The Tribunes were back within 10 late in the half, but Keith Warren Jr.'s pair of free throws made it a 12-point game. Jaziar Whitely made 1-of-2 from the line for the Tribunes to get back within 11, but Melvin Council Jr. knocked down a three to put the Mustangs back up by 14. Council then got to the line with 48 seconds left, making both opportunities to put the Mustangs up, 55-39, heading into the halftime break.
 
Council led the Mustangs with 10 points at the break. Warren netted nine off the bench, while Kyrin Hill and Jerald Campbell each picked up six points apiece off the bench. Nikola Danicic led the team with six rebounds, while Keon Gill dished out four assists.
 
It took just under four minutes for the Mustangs to outscore the Tribunes, 7-1, to take a 25-point lead in the second half. The Mustangs held a comfortable lead from that point forward. The Tribunes got back within 20 with 8:29 on the clock, but the Mustangs scored the next five to keep things in check. The lead peaked at 28 points after a pair of free throws by Nikola Danicic with 3:53 to play, eventually leading to the Mustangs' 24-point victory in front of the home crowd.
 
Council finished with a team-high 18 points in the win, adding eight rebounds and three blocks. Keon Gill netted 15 points and handed out four assists. Warren tallied 11 points with three assists. David Gordon was close to a double-double with 10 points and eight boards. Braelon Joe led the Mustangs with five assists in the win.
 
The Mustangs' bench scored more than half of the team's points in Saturday's win, totaling 51 points compared to just 21 bench points for the Tribunes. The Mustangs also took advantage of a 27-10 edge in takeaways with a 26-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
The Mustangs will look to improve upon their current seven-game winning streak tomorrow, Dec. 12, when they host Howard Community College on the final day of the Monroe College Men's & Women's Mixer at the MAC. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
