CHARLOTTE, N.C., December 1, 2021 –
Sydoney Clarke and
Stefane Rosa of the Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team both became two-time All-Americans on Tuesday, as the sophomores were both selected to the 2021 NJCAA Div. I Women's Soccer All-America First Team.
Clarke and Rosa both repeat as First-Team All-Americans. Each of them earned the same honor back in 2019, the last season in which the Mustangs competed. 2021 marks the third straight season that the Mustangs have had multiple First-Team All-Americans.
Clarke completely transformed her game in 2021 to admirably fill a need for the Mustangs. After finishing the 2019 season as a Top-5 scorer in the NJCAA, Clarke moved back to play center midfield for Monroe this season, and she excelled in this role to earn her All-American status. She was excellent as a two-play player for Monroe, helping the Mustangs allow less than a goal per game. Clarke also stepped up offensively when called upon, scoring twice in a victory over Daytona State College down in Florida, setting up goals in each of Monroe's East District Tournament games, and picking up a goal in the Mustangs' NJCAA Championship opener against Motlow State. Clarke's excellent performance on the field down in Daytona earned her a spot on the 2021 NJCAA Div. I Women's Soccer Championship All-Tournament Team.
Rosa was once again dominant between the pipes for Monroe in 2021 to once again be selected as the NJCAA's top goalkeeper. Rosa missed Monroe's season opener, its only regular-season loss of the 2021 campaign. She then went unbeaten for 11 straight contests, going 9-0-2 before a 1-0 loss to No. 1 Tyler Junior College in the NJCAA Championships. The sophomore netminder registered seven shutouts in 12 contests and finished the season with a goals-against average of 0.64 and a save percentage of .860, both improved numbers from her incredible 2019 season. One of Rosa's shutouts was a 0-0 stalemate after 110 minutes on the road at eventual National Champion Eastern Florida State College, as well as shutouts against three other nationally ranked programs.
Monroe's pool-play loss to top-seeded Tyler was just the second of the 2021 season for Monroe, and both losses on the season came against Top-2 ranked teams at neutral sites. The Mustangs finished the season 9-2-2 overall, having made their third straight appearance in the NJCAA Div. I Women's Soccer Championship. They claimed the 2021 East District Championship with wins over Monroe Community College and Montgomery College in the district tournament.
