Monroe Mustangs JV Basketball Falls in Close Matchup to Prestige Prep

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 28, 2021 – A tight second half went the way of the visitors on Sunday, as the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team dropped 63-59 score to Prestige Preparatory Academy at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs fall to 1-4 overall with the loss.
 
After a slow start to the game, the scoring picked up with just over 13 minutes left in the first half after the Patriots took a 10-9 lead on the Mustangs. Monroe responded with a 15-2 run to go up, 24-12, with 8:18 on the clock. Prestige followed with the next 10 points to get within two, later tying the game at 26-26 with 4:48 to go. The two teams were locked up, 28-28, before the Mustangs scored the final eight points of the half, including a buzzer-beating three by Jahel Ramsey, to take a 36-28 edge heading into the break.
 
Ramsey led all scorers with 14 points at the half. Richie Guillaume was next with 12 points and nine rebounds. Isaiah Hanley added eight points and a team-high 13 boards through 20 minutes.
 
Monroe pushed its lead to 39-30 early in the second half, but Prestige Prep closed the gap, getting within one at 41-40. The Patriots took a 46-43 edge shortly after. Monroe took the lead back with 5:58 on the clock after Guillaume hit a three to make it a 52-51 game. After trading the lead, the Patriots went back up, 55-54, with 3:13 on the clock, and never forfeited the lead back to the Mustangs. The lead reached 59-54, but Monroe went on a 5-2 run to get back within two. Kareem Irby made 1-of-2 free throws for the Patriots to make it a three-point game, but the Mustangs were unable to tie. Tye Artis made one more free throw for Prestige Prep with two seconds left to give the visitors at 63-59 win.
 
Despite the loss, Guillaume and Hanley both produced double-doubles. Guillaume finished with 27 points and 19 rebounds, while Hanley totaled 13 points and 23 boards in the game. Ramsey tallied 17 points for the Mustangs.
 
The Mustangs take to the road on Friday, Dec. 3, to take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent JV team in Riverdale, N.Y. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
