SELDEN, N.Y., October 8, 2021 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team got back in the win column on Friday, defeating Suffolk County Community College by a score of 4-1 out on Long Island. The Mustangs improve to 4-5 overall with the win, while Suffolk falls to 6-3.
 
Liam Murray scored the opening goal in the 11th minute off an assist from Isaac Garro Coto, but Suffolk's Sean Nigg tied the game in the 32nd minute to send the game to the half with a 1-1 stalemate.
 
It was all Mustangs in the second half. Murray netted his second of the day off a feed from Nedim Skenderevic in the 52nd minute, and then Murray set up Tony Yeboah for a score a minute later to make it a two-goal lead. Nils Friebe capped things off with a penalty-kick goal at 80' for the eventual 4-1 final.
 
Mathew Nikolovski stopped two shots to pick up the win and improve to 1-3 on the season. Suffolk goalkeeper Anthony Molina made seven saves, but yielded four goals to take the loss.
 
Murray finished with a team-high five points in the win on his two goals and an assist. Tony Yeboah and Nils Friebe provided the other two scores, while Garro Coto and Skenderevic each registered an assist.
 
The Mustangs now await postseason announcements.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
