NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 22, 2021 – With a different makeup around the East District in 2021, the Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team and Monroe Community College competed on Friday in a Region 3/Region 15 Championship game to determine which team would team would represent the combined region in the East District Championships. Playing for the first and only time at home this season, the Mustangs defeated the Tribunes, 4-0, at Joseph F. Fosina Field, to claim the Region 3/Region 15 Title. The Mustangs improve to 5-5 overall with the win and now qualify for the East District Championships, while the Tribunes drop to 6-5.
The Mustangs were on the offensive for much of the first half, but were unable to capitalize on many of their chances in the first 45 minutes. I took until literally the last second, but the Mustangs broke through just before halftime. After a throw in with time trickling away,
Joao Costa redirected to
Liam Murray, who fired from the top-right corner of the box off the bottom of the cross bar and over the line for the score, sending the game to the half with the Mustangs on top, 1-0.
In the 58th minute, Murray played the ball right up to the goal line through some traffic. He then crossed it out to
Isaac Garro Coto, who took his time, found his spot, and fired into the left end of the net to double the lead to 2-0 at 59:00. The lead became three in the 68th minute when
Nils Friebe and
Tony Yeboah came streaking up the field. Friebe cross to the front of the next from the right wing, finding a diving Yeboah for a header past the keeper to make it a 3-0 game. The Mustangs added one more score in the 85th minute when Garro Coto set up
Mauricio De Santiago for a header in front of the net to push the lead to the eventual final score of 4-0.
Goalkeeper
Tomaso Lorenzi needed just one save for the shutout victory, improving his season record to 4-1. David Indra took the loss in net for the Tribunes after allowing four goals with eight saves.
The Mustangs boasted four different goal scorers in the win. Garro Coto and Murray each had three points on the day with a goal and an assist. Garro Coto's score was his team-leading eighth of the season, while Murray's was his seventh of the year. De Santiago netted his first of the year late in the game, while Yeboah's diving header was his fourth of the season.
The Mustangs spent the majority of the game in the offensive zone, outshooting the Tribunes, 23-3, including a 12-1 edge in shots on goal. They also held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2.
The Mustangs will now await an announcement on the East District Championships to know what comes next. Check back here on MonroeCollegeMustangs.com for the latest updates.
