NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 22, 2020 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team controlled from start to finish, rolling to a 90-56 victory over SUNY Sullivan JV on Saturday in American Independent Post Grad and Collegiate Conference (AIPGCC) action at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 13-14 overall and 8-4 in conference play, while the Generals fall to 7-9 and 2-6.
The Mustangs celebrated Sophomore Day prior to tip-off on Saturday. Monroe celebrated the careers of its two sophomores,
Luis Quinones and
Erizander Laureano, in a Sophomore Day ceremony.
The Mustangs dominated throughout the first half on Saturday. An early 14-8 lead quickly became a 23-8 advantage with a 9-0 run. A 12-0 run later in the half pushed the lead to 20 points, and another 10 straight shortly after put the Mustangs ahead, 45-17. Monroe closed out the half with a 51-25 advantage.
Jedidiah Ashton led the team at the half with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Jai Redd picked up 10 points, while
Luis Quinones added nine points of his own.
Keniah Lloyd matched Ashton's seven boards and picked up six points.
The Mustangs netted the first five points of the second half to go up by 31 points. A 10-2 run early in the half made it a 68-32 game, and an 8-0 run later in the frame put the Mustangs up, 76-37. The Mustangs maintained their sizable lead the rest of the way, finishing things off for a 34-point win.
Jai Redd led the Mustangs with a season-high 18 points in Saturday's win. Ashton and Lloyd both finished with double-doubles in the game. Ashton totaled 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Lloyd picked up 12 points and 12 boards. Quinones tallied 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
The Mustangs will conclude the regular season on Monday, Feb. 24, when they host the Monroe Express JV team in a recently scheduled matchup to take place at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The inter-campus matchup is set to tip off at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
