NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 18, 2020 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team turned in a terrific defensive effort on Tuesday en route to a 65-39 victory over the County College of Morris a the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 17-11 overall with the win, while the Titans drop to 6-16.
The Mustangs got off to a fast start, opening the game on an 11-2 run. The two teams went back-and-forth to close out the first quarter, seeing Monroe take a 16-9 lead into the second.
The Titans opened the second with four straight points to cut the deficit to three. The Mustangs responded with threes by
Daja Wentz and
India Keene, which kicked off a 10-0 run that put Monroe up, 26-13. Brielle Fedo hit a three for the Titans to get them back within 10, but
Cheyenne Talbot made the last bucket of the half to put Monroe up, 28-16, heading into the break.
The Mustangs opened up the second half on a 15-1 run, taking a 43-17 lead with 2:56 left in the third. The lead reached 30 points as the buzzer sounded when
Maya Crimes was able to lay one in right before the end of the quarter, sending the game to the fourth with a 51-21 score.
Monroe's lead peaked at 34 points when a layup by
Devon Adams made it a 59-25 game with 6:45 left in the game. The Mustangs slowed the game down the rest of the way, wrapping things up with a 65-39 victory.
Crimes registered a double-double in the win with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Talbot led the team in scoring with 12 points. Wentz also scored 11 points in the win, while Adams netted 10 points.
The Mustangs get back to work on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they host Nassau Community College in their final regular-season game of 2019-20. The Mustangs will also celebrate Sophomore Day on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
