Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Rumbles to Region XV Victory over ASA

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 28, 2020 – In the first game of the 2019-20 season between the two Region XV rivals, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team rolled to a 60-33 victory over ASA College Tuesday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 13-10 overall with the win and 1-0 in region play, while the Avengers drop to 5-13 and 0-1.
 
In a low-scoring first quarter, the Mustangs got the early lead with an 8-4 advantage with 5:38 left in the period. Six straight points by the Avengers put the visitors on top, 10-8, but the Mustangs responded with the final four points of the quarter, taking a 12-10 edge into the second.
 
ASA quickly tied the game with two points in the first 20 seconds of the second quarter, but the Mustangs scored the next four, and eight of the next nine, to go up, 20-13. After two points from the Avengers, the Mustangs scored nine straight points while holding the Avengers scoreless for the final three minutes of the half, taking a 29-15 advantage into the break.
 
Cheyenne Talbot led the Mustangs with eight points at the break. Devon Adams had a strong half, scoring six points and leading all players with 10 rebounds.
 
It was a dominant third quarter for the Mustangs, who opened the second half on a 9-0 run to go up by 23 points. The Mustangs continued to pound it on in the third, outscoring the Avengers, 9-4, the rest of the quarter to take a 47-21 advantage into the fourth.
 
The Avengers controlled the fourth quarter early on, outscoring the Mustangs, 7-2, over the first five minutes of the period. The Mustangs were able to even things out to go back up by 25 points with two minutes left to play. Defense took over from there, seeing the Mustangs wrap things up with a 60-33 victory.
 
Adams picked up a double-double in the win, scoring 11 points and pulling down a dominant 17 rebounds. Talbot also completed a double-double, matching Adams' 11 points while grabbing 10 rebounds of her own and passing out three assists. Daja Wentz led the Mustangs with 13 points, adding five boards and two steals. India Keene scored just two points but helped out with a team-high six assists and also had a pair of steals. ToniRenee Blanford tallied 10 points and picked up six rebounds in the win as well.
 
The Mustangs get a day off before returning to action on Thursday, Jan. 30, when they host Raritan Valley Community College at the MAC. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
