Eaton Sinks Game-Winner to Lift Monroe Mustangs Men’s Basketball over Erie in MLK Classic Finale

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 19, 2020 – Ja'Mani Eaton completed a late comeback for the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team in the final men's contest of the Monroe College MLK Classic at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Sunday, sinking the game-winning jumper with just 17 seconds left to give the Mustangs an 81-79 victory over Erie Community College. The Mustangs improve to 15-7 overall with the win, while the Kats fall to 12-3.
 
The Mustangs trailed, 79-75, with just 2:51 remaining in the second half on Sunday. Elijah Mitchell cut the deficit in half with 2:19 on the clock after draining a pair of free throws. Another foul just 27 seconds later sent Zion Styles to the line for Monroe, where he was able to make both chances to tie the game at 79-79. Both teams missed chances in the final 90 seconds until Eaton was able to hit what proved to be a game-winning two-pointer with 17 seconds left, giving the Mustangs a two-point win at home.
 
Styles led Monroe with 26 points in the win, completing a double-double with 11 rebounds. Eaton netted a season-high 18 points, while Juan Felix Rodriguez tallied 14 points in the game. Mitchell and Eaton matched with a team-high four assists, while Mitchell also had four steals and two blocks to go with his nine points.
 
The Mustangs hit the road on Thursday, Jan. 23, for their first region matchup of the season against Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
