No. 1 Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer Rolls to Victory at Rowan Burlington

WESTAMPTON, N.J., September 3, 2019 – Competing in their third straight game on the road to start the season, the newly No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team defeated Rowan College at Burlington County by a score of 8-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Westampton Sports Complex. The Mustangs improve to 3-0 on the year with the win, while the Barons drop to 3-1.
 
It did not take long for the Mustangs to get on the board on Tuesday, as Luca Erhardt opened the scoring in the eighth minute to give Monroe a 1-0 lead. Midway through the half, Roque Viegas scored the Mustangs' second of the day to double the lead. Monroe took its 2-0 edge into the halftime break.
 
In the 52nd minute, Erhardt netted his second of the day to make it a 3-0 game. Viegas then scored his second of the afternoon in the 63rd minute to put the Mustangs ahead by four. Markus Maurer followed with another just seven minutes later, and Kaiya Kobayashi added another in the 73rd minute to take a commanding 6-0 edge. RCBC's Aidan O'Brien ended Monroe's shutout in the 80th minute, but Daniel Haegler and Shawn Manley West each scored in the final 10 minutes to finish things off with an 8-1 victory.
 
Oliver Semmle picked up his second win of the year after making four saves and allowing just one goal. Matt Dadd suffered his first loss of the year for the Barons after giving up eight goals, despite making 15 saves.
 
Erhardt and Viegas each scored twice in the win, and continue to share the team lead with five goals on the season. Maurer netted his third of the year, while Haegler, Kobayashi and Manley West each tallied their first scores of 2019. Leon Sitz dished out a pair of assists for the Mustangs, while Erhardt and Tatsushi Hirata each registered a helper.
 
The Mustangs tripled up their opponents in total shots on Tuesday, 33-11, including a 23-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Mustangs also earned 10 corner kicks, while yielding just one to the Barons.
 
The Mustangs will play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park in New Rochelle. Monroe will welcome Community College of Rhode Island to their home turf for a 7 p.m. matchup.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
