GARDEN CITY, N.Y., September 19, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team got back to its winning ways on Thursday, rolling to a three-set victory on the road at Nassau Community College in Garden City, N.Y. The Mustangs improve to 5-8 overall, while the Lions drop to 0-10.
The Mustangs controlled the match from start-to-finish on Thursday. They hit an impressive .448 in the win, while holding the Lions to a hitting percentage of -.250. Monroe picked up set victories of 25-12, 25-5 and 25-8 in the win, hitting an incredible .700 in a dominant second set.
Masoomeh Angooti led the team with nine kills and hit .615 in the win.
Yarianne Gonzalez dished out a team-high 21 assists and served up eight aces.
Melanie Orsini picked up 11 digs, while Angooti and
Alondra Ramos each had four. Orsini also had seven aces in the win. Ramos added five kills, while
Lillian Olson and
Zassmine Birdwell both had four kills apiece.
The Mustangs get a week off before getting back to work on Friday, Sept. 27, when they visit Montgomery College-Rockville in Rockville, Md. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
