July Sosa Named NJCAA Baseball All-American Honorable Mention

CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 11, 2019 – Sophomore starting pitcher July Sosa of the 2019 Alpine Bank Junior College World Series participant, Eastern District Champion and Region XV Champion Monroe College Mustangs baseball team, has been named to the 2019 NJCAA Division I Baseball All-America Team as an honorable mention, as announced by the NJCAA on Tuesday.

Sosa becomes the second All-American in Monroe Mustangs baseball history. His selection is the second in as many years, following Antonio Frias' distinction as a First-Team All-American in 2018.

Sosa earned 2019 Region XV Player of the Year honors and was joined by six teammates on the All-Region XV Team. In his lone year with the Mustangs, Sosa had an outstanding season, finishing 6-3 with a 2.76 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and opposing hitter batted just .216 against him. Sosa's 114 strikeouts across 71.2 innings were tied for eighth in the nation, while his 14.32 strikeouts per nine innings averaged was tied for seventh in the entire NJCAA this year.

Sosa capped off a phenomenal season with the Mustangs by playing a key role in the team's postseason run. He was instrumental in the Mustangs' Game 1 victory over ASA College in the Region XV Championship Series, going the complete nine innings and giving up just one run to help the Mustangs take a 2-0 lead in the series. Sosa took the hill in the Mustangs' Eastern District Championship opener against Harford Community College, and did not allow an earned run while striking out 11 batters in the complete five innings of Monroe's 14-2 statement victory. As the Mustangs' ace all year, he also drew the start in their JUCO World Series opener against eventual champion Central Arizona College.

The Mustangs went 1-2 at the JUCO World Series for the second straight year. Monroe finished the year at 33-19 overall after making their second straight appearance in the JUCO World Series. The Mustangs won their second consecutive Eastern District Championship in 2019, and their fifth Region XV title in a row.
