NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., April 8, 2019 – In a shortened contest due to lateness, the Monroe College Mustangs JV baseball team held on to defeat SUNY Ulster by a score of 5-4 Monday evening at Dick Caswell Field. The Mustangs improve to 5-12 with the win, while the Senators fall to 9-8.
Â
The Mustangs got started quickly in Monday evening's game.
Jonas Marte led off the bottom of the first with a walk, and then moved to second on a wild pitch.
Javier Ortiz then ripped a single up the middle, scoring Marte for a quick 1-0 lead.
Carlos Aranda followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Aranda then stole second, and the throw went into center field, allowing Ortiz to score and make it a 2-0 game.
Nick Simonenko followed with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Aranda to put the Mustangs up, 3-0.
Â
Forrest Ruiz sent a line drive into the right-center gap for a triple to lead off the second. He then came in on a wild pitch to put the Mustangs up by four.
Â
The Senators found their way onto the board in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch brought in Ulster's first run of the day. Tyler Guadagno then hit a two-RBI single to center, making it a 4-3 ballgame.
Â
The Mustangs loaded the bases in the bottom of the third.
Eddy Vicioso then grounded into a double play, but it was enough to score Ortiz from third to make it a 5-3 lead for Monroe.
Â
With time running thin before the lights turned off at Dick Caswell Field, the Senators managed to once again load the bases in the top of the fifth. A walk by Michael Holohan brought in a run to get Ulster within one, but the Mustangs escaped from there to hang on to the lead, ultimately winning the game by a single run.
Â
Jorge Gonzalez earned the win for the Mustangs, allowing four runs across five frames with six strikeouts to improve to 1-1.
Adrian Murillo closed out the game with a hitless sixth inning to earn his first save. Jumy Poueriet took the loss for Ulster to fall to 0-1.
Â
Ortiz finished 1-for-1 with two runs, an RBI and two walks. Ruiz went 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. Aranda batted 1-for-2 with a run.
Â
The Mustangs will hit the road for their final two games of the season, beginning with a matchup at SUNY Sullivan on Wednesday, April 10. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
