Monroe Mustangs JV Baseball Closes Season with Victory at Monroe Express JV

BRONX, N.Y., April 11, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV baseball team closed out the 2019 campaign on the right foot, defeating their Bronx campus counterparts, the Monroe College Express JV baseball team, by a score of 12-3 Thursday afternoon at Roberto Clemente State Park. The Mustangs finish the year with a 6-12 record, while the Express drop to 0-6.

The Express got on the board first in the bottom of the first frame. The Express had runners on second and third with two outs despite drawing three walks. A wild pitch then brought in Jasson Medina from third, putting the home team up, 1-0.

The Mustangs tied the game with a leadoff solo homer by Keanu Paulino in the top of the fourth. Bryant Perdomo was then hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a balk, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch then brought him in to score and put the Mustangs on top, 2-1. The Mustangs later loaded the bases, and another walk by Chayanne Carty brought in the third run of the inning to leave the Mustangs up, 3-1.

The Mustangs took a big lead in the top of the sixth. They quickly loaded the bases with nobody out after two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Forrest Ruiz then brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to center, making it a three-run game. Carlos Aranda then blasted a three-run homer to left-center, giving the Mustangs a 7-1 advantage. Carty followed with a walk, and then Stanley David hit a single into left. A double steal put both runners in scoring position, setting up Perdomo for a two-RBI single through the left side, giving the Mustangs an eight-run lead.

The Mustangs once again drew the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, this time with two outs in the inning. Kevin Hernandez then nearly got picked off at third, but took off for home on the play. The throw home was dropped by the catcher, allowing him to score and the other runners to move up, making it a 10-1 game. After a walk by David, Eric Diaz hit a two-RBI single to center, leaving the Mustangs ahead, 12-1.

The Express rallied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to plate two more runs, but it was not enough to avoid a run-rule finish, as the Mustangs picked up the 12-3 victory.

Paul Delgado got the win for the Mustangs to improve to 2-1 on the season. He tossed three innings in relief, allowing no runs and just two hits while striking out six batters. Jason Paulino got the start and threw three scoreless frames with four strikeouts. Medina took the loss for the Express after giving up three runs in the fourth inning.

Aranda knocked in a team-high three RBIs after going 1-for-3 with a home run, scoring twice himself as well. Perdomo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run and a double. Diaz hit 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Keanu Paulino batted 1-for-3 with a solo homer. Hernandez drew three walks and scored twice in the win.
