Monroe Mustangs Softball Drops Two Close Games at Morris

RANDOLPH, N.J., April 27, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs softball team got into a pair of pitcher's duels at County College of Morris on Saturday, but unfortunately came up a run short in each game. The Mustangs fell, 1-0, in Saturday's opener, and took a walkoff loss in Game 2, 3-2. The Mustangs fall to 21-14 on the year with the losses, while Morris improves to 37-9.

GAME 1: MORRIS 1, MONROE 0
The only run of Game 1 scored in the bottom of the third for the Titans. Jade Deaver led off the frame by reaching on an error. Morris later loaded the bases, and Alyssa Borozan brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Titans a 1-0 advantage.

Macie Kuppenbender went the full six innings in Game 1, allowing just two hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts, but took the hard-luck loss to fall to 19-10. Nicoel Carter picked up the complete-game shutout victory for Morris to improve to 17-6.

Stacy Hernandez hit 1-for-3 with a triple for Monroe in Saturday's opener. Kaylynn Lopez also batted 1-for-3.

GAME 2: MORRIS 3, MONROE 2
The Titans took an early lead in Game 2 when Nicole Catalina hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to give the home team a 1-0 edge.

Katlyn Lloyd hit an RBI double for the Titans in the bottom of the third, knocking in Ciara Lyons, who reached on an error, to make it a two-run game.

The Mustangs strung together a two-out rally in the fifth to get their first runs of the day. Marissa Vanduzer reached on an error by the shortstop to keep the inning going. Chantel Winstead then walked, and Kuppenbender singled in Vanduzer to cut the deficit in half. Lopez followed with another single, knocking in Winstead to tie the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. Lloyd reached on an error that put her on second base. She then stole third, and the throw got away, allowing her to score and end the game.

Kuppenbender had another strong game, tossing six innings and allowing just one earned run, but once again took the loss to fall to 19-11. Kellie Faber picked up the win for Morris to remain perfect at 18-0.

Vanduzer hit 2-for-3 with a run in Game 2. Lopez batted 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kuppenbender finished 1-for-4 with an RBI of her own.

The Mustangs will look to bounce back on Monday, April 29, with their final doubleheader of the regular season. Monroe will visit SUNY Orange in Middletown, N.Y. for a 3:30 p.m. twinbill.
