NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 23, 2019 – The Monroe Mustangs men's basketball team capped off the 2018-19 regular season with their 13th-straight victory, a 97-53 win over the SUNY Sullivan Generals on Saturday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
 
After the Generals hit two quick threes to open the first half, the Mustangs scored 25 of the next 30 to take a 25-11 lead midway through the first half.
 
Sullivan cut the lead down to single digits with just over 10 minutes to play before halftime, but the Mustangs went on another huge run, this time outscoring the Generals, 25-9, over the next 8:27 to take a 24-point, 50-26 lead, their largest lead of the first half.
 
The Mustangs, led by Zion Styles' 12 first-half points, took a 50-30 lead into the locker room, shooting 51.4 percent from the floor.
 
Monroe continued their hot shooting to start the second half, extending their lead to 32 and forcing another Generals' timeout with 16:09 to play. The Mustangs outscored SUNY Sullivan 14-2 over the first four minutes of the second half, shooting 75 percent from the field.
 
And the Mustangs wouldn't stop there, extending their lead out to 43 as Monroe outscored SUNY Sullivan, 25-2 to start the second half.
 
The Mustangs led by as many as 55 before Sullivan closed the gap over the final three minutes with a 13-2 run, as Monroe picked up the 97-53 victory.
 
With the win, the Mustangs wrap up the regular season with a 24-5 record, while Sullivan finishes the year 20-7.
 
Five Mustangs finished in double-figures led by Styles who tallied 17 points. Juan Felix Rodriguez and Mouhamadou Gueye each scored 16 points, Lovro Bulesic totaled 11 points and Will Martinez added 10.
Rodriguez also recorded a team-high seven assists, while Gueye notched a team-high seven boards.
 
The Mustangs shot 53.6 percent while holding the Generals to just 29.1 percent shooting. Monroe also outscored Sullivan, 52-18, in the paint and 26-2 on the fast break.
 
The Mustangs next take on the winner of No. 2 Harcum vs. No. 3 ASA College in the Region Final on Sunday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 29 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has nine varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
