Monroe Mustangs Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at Harford

BEL AIR, Md., February 23, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs baseball team split a doubleheader against the Harford Community College Fighting Owls on Saturday at the Harford Varsity Baseball Field, holding on to take game one, 5-4, before dropping game two by the final score of 5-3. The Mustangs wrap up the weekend set with a 2-12 record, while Harford moves to 5-4.

GAME 1: MONROE 5, HARFORD 4
After a leadoff single and a hit-by-pitch, Daniel Alfonzo got things started for the Mustangs with a three-run homer, his third of the season. After the Fighting Owls made an early pitching change, Freddy Rojas Jr. launched a solo shot of his own, giving the Mustangs a 4-0 lead after one.

Brandon Backman got the start for the Mustangs and locked things down through four innings of work. Backman struck out the side in the first and second and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third and around a one-out walk in the fourth, striking out nine through four innings pitched.

Jose Martinez led off the top of the fifth with a single, advanced to second on a throwing error, third on Thomas Drouin's sacrifice bunt and scored on Joseph Encarnacion's sacrifice fly to extend Monroe's lead to 5-0.

Harford though, finally got to Backman in the fifth. Nolan Charlton's two-out solo home run got the Fighting Owls on the scoreboard, before Spencer Harbert launched another homer to make it 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

The Fighting Owls added another run in the sixth on a throwing error, and the Mustangs headed to the seventh, up 5-3.

Elian Oda relieved Backman to start the seventh, and although Harford cut the Mustangs' lead to 5-4, and loaded the bases with two outs, Oda struck out Reyce Curnane to nail down the save and give the Mustangs the 5-4 victory.

Backman (1-1) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits over 6.0 innings pitched while striking out 11 and walking seven. Oda notched the save, his first, for the Mustangs, while Mike Taylor (2-1) took the loss for Harford.

Alfonzo led the Mustangs at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a walk, home run and three RBI, while Martinez added two hits going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

GAME 2: HARFORD 5, MONROE 3

With two outs and Martinez on second, Encarnacion got the scoring started in the top of the first inning, knocking in Martinez to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with an RBI double.

Harford though, tied things up in the bottom of the second. A walk and a single put two runners on before a wild pitch and Ajay Sczepkowski's groundout tied the game at one.

Both teams went scoreless in the third, before Harford took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Curnane worked a walk and stole second, coming home on Thomas Hojnacki's RBI single to give the Fighting Owls their first lead of the doubleheader.

Edison Sanchez stranded Hojnacki at second to keep the deficit at one, but the Fighting Owls would add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Gabriel Rodriguez relieved Sanchez to begin the frame, but a leadoff walk and a double quickly ended the Fighting Owls' lead to 3-1. Harbert singled to put two on, before Curnane's RBI two-run double made it 5-1.

The Mustangs threatened in the top of the seventh, putting two on and one-out for Martinez, who brought two runs in with a two-run single, but Billy Kral came in and got the final two out to lock down the save for Harford, and finish off the 5-3 victory.

Sanchez (0-2) took the loss for Monroe, allowing two runs on three hits over 4.0 innings pitched, striking out six, while Marty Neal (1-1) picked up the win and Kral (2) earned the save.

At the plate, Martinez again led the Express, going 1-for-3 with a run scored, a stolen base and an RBI, while four Mustangs all hit doubles, including Encarnacion, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Mustangs are back in action on Friday, March 1 when they head down to Sumter, S.C. to take on the USC Sumter Fire Ants in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
