Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Tops Monroe Express, 84-40, on Sophomore Night

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 21, 2019 – The Monroe Mustangs women's basketball team celebrated Sophomore Night in style as they defeated the Monroe College Express in their second intra-campus matchup of the season, 84-40.
 
After a slow start, with just two total points scored in the first 3:51, the Mustangs finished the first quarter on a 13-3 run to take a 15-3 lead.
 
The Mustangs continued their run into the second quarter, extending their lead to 29-5 with a 14-2 run to open the second quarter. The Mustangs outscored the Express, 27-5, over the entire second quarter to take a 42-8 lead into the break.
 
In the third quarter, the Mustangs continued their charge, shooting 60 percent from the floor while holding the Express to just 23.1 percent shooting to extend their lead to 70-14 at the end of the quarter.
 
The Mustangs led by as many as 62, with 5:08 remaining in the fourth quarter before pulling away with 84-40 victory.
 
Aneisha Lyons led the Express with 17 points, adding eight rebounds and three assists, while Phyness Baldwin, Ty-Tiana and Devon Adams tallied 12 points apiece.
 
Baldwin also added a team-high eight assists and six steals, as well as six rebounds.
 
The Mustangs shot 41.2 percent from the floor while holding the Express to just 28.8 percent shooting. Monroe also out-rebounded the Express, 59-34.
 
The Mustangs finish the regular season with a 20-8 record, and will be back in action when they travel to the District C Tournament hosted by the Region XX Champ on March 8.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
