PANAMA CITY, Fla., December 30, 2019 – Continuing its Florida trip at the Visit Panama City Beach Men's Basketball Classic, hosted by Gulf Coast Community College, the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team suffered a narrow 67-65 defeat at the hands of Northwest Florida State Monday afternoon. The Mustangs fall to 11-6 overall with the loss, while the Raiders improve to 11-4.
Zion Styles had a big game for Monroe, scoring 19 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists, six steals and a blocked shot.
Julio Pascual netted 13 points with 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Jabari Merritt added 10 points and nine boards, while
Juan Felix Rodriguez scored eight points with another nine rebounds and four assists.
Luis Herrera also scored eight points and pulled down five boards.
The Mustangs wrap up their holiday trip down south on Tuesday, Dec. 31, with a New Year's Eve matchup against host Gulf Coast Community College. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. EST.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
