BRONX, N.Y., December 10, 2019 –
ToniRenee Blanford sank a pair of free throws with just 2.6 seconds remaining to help the Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team's 56-54 victory over NJCAA Div. III No. 4-ranked Hostos Community College on the road Tuesday evening. The Mustangs improve to 5-5 overall with the win, while the Caimans drop to 7-3.
Blanford's free throws in the final seconds of the game secured a road victory for the Mustangs, the team's first such win of the season. The win also halts a two-game skid for the Mustangs.
Blanford was second on the team with 12 points in the win, adding four rebounds and two assists.
Daja Wentz came off the bench to score 16 points, pull down seven boards and pick up three steals.
Devon Adams made 3-of-3 from beyond the arc to finish with 11 points, as well as eight rebounds.
Maya Crimes led the team with nine rebounds, adding six points.
The Mustangs will look to build a winning streak this weekend when they take to the road for the Cecil College Holiday Tournament, hosted by Cecil College in North East, Md. Monroe opens the weekend against host Cecil on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 5 p.m. The Mustangs will then take on Chesapeake College on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m.
