REGION CHAMPS! No. 1 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Blanks CCRI to Claim Region Title

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 1, 2019 – The No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team is heading back to the Northeast District Championship, as the Mustangs defeated Region XIX's Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), 6-0, Friday afternoon at Flowers Park. The Mustangs improve to 9-0 on the year with the win, while the Knights drop to 7-4-1.

The Mustangs got off to a quick start with Sydoney Clarke potting the games' opening score at 8:26 off an assist from Paula DePaiva Toledo. Regina Fiabema made it 2-0 just four minutes later, and then Luana Grabias scored off a feed from Mayra de Lima to make it a 3-0 game in the 23rd minute.

Clarke netted her second of the day in the 27th minute to make it a four-goal game, and picked up one more at 32:13 off a cross from Laia Munoz Danon to complete a hat trick and push Monroe's lead to 5-0, which the Mustangs took into the halftime break.

Nearly the entire second half was quiet until Grabias tallied her second of the day at the 83:58 mark, once again assisted by de Lima, to make it a 6-0 game.

Stefane Rosa improved to a perfect 9-0 on the season with the win, needing just one save to earn the shutout victory. CCRI goalkeeper Madeline Brassard allowed six goals and made 15 saves to shoulder the loss.

Clarke scored three times in the win, her sixth game of three-or-more goals in just nine contests this season. Grabias added two goals and an assist for a five-point day. Fiabema also scored in the game. De Lima provided a pair of assists, while Danon and Toledo had one assist apiece.

With the win, the Mustangs qualify for the 2019 NJCAA Northeast District Championship tournament, which will be hosted next weekend at the Region 20 Champion. The schedule for the Northeast District Championships will be announced in the coming days.
