Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1 Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer Leaves no Doubt in Shutout Victory over No. 9 Mercer County

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 6, 2019 – In a big-time Top-10 battle at Skidelsky Field, the No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team left no doubt that they continue to deserve the top ranking in the NJCAA, as the Mustangs shut out No. 9 Mercer County Community College, 5-0, Saturday evening. The Mustangs improve to 9-0 on the season with the win, while the Vikings drop to 12-2.

Things got off to a slow start on Saturday, but Leon Sitz got the Mustangs on the board off an assist from Roque Viegas in the 29th minute to put the Mustangs on top, 1-0. That was it for the scoring in the first half, as the Mustangs took their 1-0 edge into the break.

Things opened up early on in the second half for Monroe. Viegas scored at 52:56 off a feed from Daniel Haegler to make it a 2-0 game. Haegler then set up Henry Davies for a score just five minutes later, pushing Monroe's lead to 3-0. Luca Erhardt netted his 20th goal of the season off another Viegas assist at 65:39 to put the Mustangs ahead by four. Sitz then capped off a big second half with his second of the day at 74:02 off an assist by Cameron Murray to make it a 5-0 game.

Oliver Semmle made three saves in net for Monroe to register his second shutout and fifth victory of the year. Takumi Muraji took the loss for Mercer County after making 10 saves but allowing five goals.

The Mustangs doubled up the Vikings in shots with an 18-9 advantage in the win, including a 15-3 margin in shots on goal. The Mustangs also had five corner kicks while allowing just one for the Vikings.

The Mustangs will play next on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they host Region XV rival ASA College at Skidelsky Field. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
