No. 1 Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer Claims Region XV Regular-Season Title with Shutout of ASA

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 12, 2019 – With a 6-0 victory over Region XV rival ASA College Saturday evening at Skidelsky Field, the No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team claimed the region's regular-season title and the right to host the region championship game. The Mustangs improve to 10-0 overall and 2-0 in Region XV play, while the Avengers drop to 2-6-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in region competition.

The game got off to a slow start, but the Mustangs managed to grab the early lead when scoring leader Luca Erhardt netted his first of the evening off a feed from Leon Sitz at the 9:54 mark to make it a 1-0 game. Neither team was able to break through for the rest of the half despite 13 shots by the Mustangs, sending the game to the break with a 1-0 score.

The first 20 minutes of the second half were quiet, but the Mustangs looked closer and closer to breaking it open. At 65:45, Erhardt's second goal of the night opened the floodgates for Monroe and pushed the lead to 2-0. Erhardt incredibly scored again just 28 seconds later to put the Mustangs up by three. Shawn Manley West kept it going with a goal at 68:58 to put Monroe up by four. Markus Maurer scored off an assist from Tobias Pellio in the 75th minute to make it a five-goal game, and then Itsuki Namiki capped things off with a goal in the 87th minute, with an assist coming from West, to reach the 6-0 final.

Victor Camps picked up the shutout victory with one save for the Mustangs to improve to 5-0 on the season. Zachary Daviault gave up six goals with eight stops for ASA in 73:33 in net to take his first loss.

The Mustangs dominated possession in Saturday's contest, outshooting the Avengers, 29-2, including a 16-1 margin in shots on goal. The Mustangs also had all four of the evening's corner kicks.

The Mustangs will play next on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they hit the road to take on Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
