Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Rolls Past Nassau on Sophomore Night

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 22, 2019 – On a night the Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team celebrated its seven sophomores, the Mustangs rolled to a three-set victory over Nassau Community College on Tuesday. The Mustangs improve to 19-11 overall with the win, while the Lions fall to 7-18.
 
The Mustangs got off to a slow, but steady start in the opening frame, taking a 14-6 lead before Nassau called its first timeout. The Mustangs kept it going after the break, going up, 20-9, before the Lions used another timeout. Monroe allowed just one more point after that, picking up a 25-10 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
The Mustangs jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Lions got their first point of the second set. Monroe then scored the next six points to go up, 11-1, forcing Nassau to use a timeout. The Mustangs' run became 15 straight points when they went up, 20-1, making Nassau take another break. It was 22-1 before Nassau got another point, but that was it for the Lions in the second set, as the Mustangs won, 25-2.
 
The third frame saw the Mustangs go up, 5-1, to start, and later reach a 10-3 margin to get another timeout out of Nassau. Monroe kept rolling to take an 18-6 lead, making the Lions use their final timeout. The Mustangs finished things up with a 7-2 run for a 25-8 win.
 
Giulia La Longa led the Mustangs with nine kills and hit .750 in the win, adding a pair of blocks. Alondra Ramos finished with seven kills, while Juliana Minota added six. Alondra Garcia had 15 assists and tied for the team-high with seven digs, while Yarianne Gonzalez dished out 10 assists. Melanie Orsini matched Garcia's seven digs. Milta Gonzalez served up six aces and picked up six digs.
 
The Mustangs wrap up the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 24, when they visit Raritan Valley Community College in North Branch, N.J. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
