No. 2 Monroe Men’s Soccer Nets Seven in Win over No. 4 Mercer County

WEST WINDSOR, N.J., September 8, 2018 – The No. 2-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team continued to prove itself as possibly the top team in the NJCAA on Saturday, as the Mustangs defeated No. 4 Mercer County Community College on the road by a score of 7-1. The Mustangs improve to 4-0 on the season with the win, while Mercer County drops its first decision of the year to fall to 7-1.

Last week's Mustang of the Week Ronaldo Da Silva stated his case for a repeat, scoring three times in the win for the Mustangs. Caio Guazzelli netted a pair, while Cameron Joice picked up his first of the year and Jorge Figueroa added one as well.

Figueroa got things started for the Mustangs in the 15th minute of the game when he took the ball down the wing, cut to the middle of the field, and fired from the top of the box past the keeper to make it a 1-0 game. Guazzelli then headed a pass from Javier Rodriguez into the back of the net at the 18:22 mark to make it a quick 2-0 lead for the Mustangs.

Guazzelli stayed hot, scoring just three minutes later with a shot from inside the box to push Monroe's lead to three.

The Mustangs entered the second half with that same 3-0 lead, but did not waste any time getting on the board again. Just 47 seconds into the second frame, Da Silva banked his first of the day to improve Monroe's lead to four. Joice fired one into the top of the net in the 74th minute to make it 5-0.

Da Silva added his second of the afternoon just five minutes later, squeaking one in off the crossbar to give Monroe a 6-0 edge. Mercer County broke the shutout when Daiki Nagata scored in the 81st minute, but Da Silva added one more at the 86:26 mark after faking out two defenders and scoring to reach the final score of 7-1.

Goalkeeper Victor Camps improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season with the win, making six saves while allowing just one goal. Mercer County starter Francesco Zanin shouldered his first loss of the year after yielding five goals while stopping three shots.

The Mustangs outshot their hosts on Saturday, 18-12, putting 10 of their shots on net. The Vikings held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks in the game.

The Mustangs have a week to prepare for their next contest on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they visit Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Mass. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
