BROCKTON, Mass., September 15, 2018 – With a 6-0 shutout victory at Massasoit Community College on Saturday, the No. 2-ranked Monroe College men's soccer team kept its flawless overall record, improving to 5-0 on the season. Massasoit dropped to 1-3 with the defeat.
Monroe got off to a quick start when
Othman Gherab stole the ball at midfield, went on a breakaway, and scored at the 7:38 mark to give the Mustangs a quick 1-0 advantage. That was it for the scoring in the first half, as the Mustangs took their one-goal advantage into the break.
Caio Guazzelli picked things up early in the second half, scoring in the 55th minute when he beat the keeper to the lower left corner of the net to make it a 2-0 game.
Lucas Nishioka followed shortly after with a goal in the 63rd minute to make it a three-goal Mustang lead.
Guazzelli kept the momentum rolling at the 64:13 mark when he fired one in off the crossbar off a feed from
Luca Erhardt, pushing the lead to four. Erhardt then followed with a score of his own just three minutes later to quickly make it a five-goal game.
Giulio Bregu capped things off with a goal in the 74th minute for the eventual 6-0 final.
Guazzelli's two goals give him the team lead in goals and points with six and 13, respectively. Erhardt finished with three points on the day, improving his season total to nine.
Victor Camps made four saves in 73:37 in goal for the Mustangs, picking up the win to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Chris Kaev made one save in the final 16:23. David Isaac took the loss for Massasoit after allowing six goals and making three saves.
The Mustangs will continue their season on Tuesday, Sept. 18, when they visit Rowan College at Burlington County in Pemberton, N.J. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
