DAVIE, Fla., September 7, 2018 – The No. 9 Monroe College women's soccer team capped off its trip to Florida with a 4-0 victory over Broward College Friday afternoon. The four-goal win improve the Mustangs to 4-0 on the season, while Broward drops to 0-1-1 on the year.
The game got off to a slow start, as neither team was able to fine the back of the net for the first 42 minutes.
Angie Ponce then broke through after taking the ball all the way up to the net and scoring at the 42:16 mark, leading Monroe to a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs turned up the heat in the second frame when
Mayara Queiroz Reis scored off a feed from
Laia Munoz Danon to make it a 2-0 game in the 50th minute.
Maria Santin then added her team-leading seventh goal of the year after an assist from
Francesca Sullivan at the 59:42 mark to make it a three-goal game.
Juliana Pires added one more in the 82nd minute of the game to make it 4-0 before the final whistle.
Marta Alemany did not face a single shot on goal, but improves to 4-0 on the season by not allowing a goal through 70:10 between the pipes.
Taylor Lewis made a save in relief of Alemany. Broward's Lesley Reyes shouldered the loss after giving up a goal and making four saves in the first half. Ashley Melchor yielded three goals while stopping two shots for the Seahawks in the second half.
As has been the case all season, the Mustangs held a big advantage in shots in the game, outshooting their hosts, 23-3, including a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. They also took all eight corner kicks in the game.
Monroe is scheduled to play next on Tuesday, Sept. 11, when they play and intra-campus matchup against the Monroe College Express. That game is set to kick off at 1:30 p.m. at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park in New Rochelle.
