WARWICK, R.I., September 2, 2018 – With a 6-0 shutout on the road at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) on Sunday, the No. 3-ranked Monroe Mustangs men's soccer team improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season. With the loss, CCRI falls to 0-1 to start its season.
The Mustangs got off to a quick start when
Luca Erhardt scored with a heel kick just 87 seconds into the game.
Othman Gherab followed just after the eight-minute mark to push Monroe's lead to two.
Caio Guazzelli netted his second of the year at the 12:55 mark when he capitalized on a penalty-kick opportunity, making it a 3-0 game. Neither team was able to score for the rest of the half, sending the game to the break with the same 3-0 score.
Giulio Bregu potted the first goal of the second half in the 60th minute after receiving a pass from
Ronaldo Da Silva, faking out the goalie, and putting it past him to make it 4-0. Da Silva then got one of his own after outrunning a defender in the 73rd minute, and
Daigo Gardner capped things off with his first career goal in the 81st minute to push Monroe's lead to six late in the contest.
Victor Camps got the start for Monroe, making two stops in the first half without allowing a goal to get the win and improve to 2-0.
Isac Hildingsson took over in the second half, making three saves without allowing a score. CCRI saw goalkeeper Datyn Deasley turn in just over 69 minutes in net, allowing four goals while making eight stops. Juan Gonzalez finished things off, giving up two goals and making two saves.
Bregu paced the Mustangs with five shots on the afternoon, putting three on net and one past the keeper. Guazzelli added four shots, including three on goal. Da Silva finished the day with three points with a goal and an assist.
The Mustangs outshot the Knights, 23-10, including 16 shots on goal in the game. They also earned five corner kicks, while allowing just one.
Monroe gets back to work on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they visit Mercer County Community College in West Windsor, N.J. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
