NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., April 26, 2018 – The Monroe College baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to Region XV opponent ASA College Thursday afternoon at Dick Caswell Field. The Mustangs fall to 25-12-1 overall and 4-3 in Region XV play, while ASA improves to 15-12 and 3-4.

Miguel Medina walked to lead off the bottom of the first for the Avengers. Mustang starter
Nicholas Gennarelli then struck out the next two batters, but Medina stole second on strike three of the second swing-and-miss. Siri-Jacob Ramirez then blooped a single into center, scoring Medina to give ASA an early 1-0 lead.

Darwin Tavares and Rohandry Javier led off the second with back-to-back infield singles for the Avengers. After a double steal, a grounder to short saw Tavares sprint for home, but a good throw by
Juan Torres got him at the plate for the first out of the inning. With two down, Edwin Tavares singled up the middle, scoring Javier from second to make it a 2-0 game. Ramirez then singled to right with runners on the corners, bringing in Medina to push ASA's lead to three. Juan Ramos then reached on an error, allowing two more runs to score. Louis Winter then doubled to left-center, scoring Ramos to push the lead to six.

Diego Arcelay, in his first at bat since being called up from the junior varsity team, doubled to the warning track in left field to lead off the top of the third. With two outs,
Joseph Encarnacion doubled to deep left, scoring Arcelay to get the Mustangs on the board.

The scoreboard did not light up again until the bottom of the sixth. Dilson Vasquez led off the inning with a single to center, and then Edwin Tavares ripped a double down the left-field line, scoring Vasquez all the way from first to make it a 7-1 game. Ramirez then homered over the left-field wall to push the lead to 9-1. Later in the frame, an error with two runners on allowed ASA's 10th run to score.

ASA's July Sosa went the full seven frames to pick up the win. Gennarelli shouldered the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season.

Encarnacion hit 1-for-3 with an RBI double in the game. Arcelay also hit a double, going 1-for-2 in his varsity debut.
Juan Torres went 1-for-2 as well.

Monroe heads down to West Windsor, N.J. to take on Mercer County Community College for a nine-inning game on tomorrow, April 27. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall of 2017.
