Monroe Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Potomac State College

KEYSER, W.V, April 21, 2018Francisco Justo and Richard Moesker once again turned in superb performances on the mound, while Monroe Mustangs baseball got more than enough clutch hitting to sweep their doubleheader against Potomac State College of WVU on Saturday. The Mustangs took game one, 9-2, and game two, 8-2, to move to 24-10-1 on the season.

Game 1: Monroe 9, Potomac State 2
While the Catamounts got on the board first against the Mustangs in the bottom of the first, scoring two unearned runs on Pete Costigan's two-run single, Justo and Jason Alvarez combined to shut down Potomac State the rest of the way, while Monroe's offense went to work.

After going scoreless over the first two frames, Leandy Castro led off the third with a double and came around to score on Marquis Orozco's RBI single, cutting the Catamounts' lead in half.

Justo continued his dominance with a 1-2-3 bottom of the third, before the Mustangs took the lead in the top of the fourth. Lenyn Napoleon and Troy Davern led off the inning with back-to-back singles, before Juan Torres loaded the bases with a single of his own.

With two outs, Orozco knocked in another run with a single up the middle, before Edwin Feliciano Jr. knocked in two more with a single to right, giving the Mustangs a 4-2 lead.

Justo worked another 1-2-3 frame in the bottom of the fourth, picking up two more of his eight total strikeouts, before Monroe added three more runs to their lead in the fifth.

Three straight singles to open the frame loaded the bases for Gustavo Gonzalez, who reached on a fielding error, scoring a run to make it 5-2. Torres knocked in another run on a sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-2, before Davern scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to five.

The Mustangs got another run in the top of the sixth on Iasid Bernal's RBI double, and in the seventh on Feliciano Jr.'s sacrifice fly, to extend their lead to seven. While Alvarez relieved Justo after the fifth and kept Potomac State over the final two frames to give the Mustangs a 9-2 victory.
Justo (6-0) picked up the win for the Mustangs, allowing two unearned runs on three hits, while walking one and striking out eight over 5.0 innings pitched for the Mustangs, while Brandon Schamp (3-1) took the loss for the Catamounts.

Four Mustangs tallied multiple hits at the plate, including Orozco, who went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI, while Torres went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Game 2: Monroe 8, Potomac State 2
Richard Moesker got the start for the Mustangs in game two, and worked two scoreless innings, before the Mustangs got on the scoreboard in the top of the third.

Napoleon launched a solo home run to left field, his fourth of the year, to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with two outs in the top of the third.

Moesker worked around a walk and an error for another scoreless inning in the bottom of the third, and the Mustangs came back to extend their lead in the top of the fourth. Gonzalez led off the fourth, reaching on an error, before moving to third on Torres' infield, bunt single.

Abner Vincenty made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Gonzalez from third, before Joseph Encarnacion scored Torres with an RBI single to make it 3-0 in favor of the Mustangs.

Monroe added three more in the top of the fifth, putting together a two-out rally, capped by Davern's RBI triple and Gonzalez' two-run homer to take a 6-0 lead. And again in the top of the sixth, as singles by Vincenty, Feliciano Jr. and Hartigan loaded the bases, before Meulens' sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch, made it 8-0 heading to the final one and a half frames.

The Catamounts threatened for the first time and knocked in two in the bottom of the sixth against Moesker, but Luis Grullart stranded three to get the Mustangs out of the jam and keep the lead at six.

And Victor Guzman pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to give the Mustangs a sweep of the doubleheader, and an 8-2 victory in game two.

Moesker (5-1) earned the win for the Mustangs, allowing two runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out five over 5.0 innings pitched. Brett Whiteman (3-2) took the loss for Potomac State, allowing three runs (one earned) over 4.1 innings pitched.

Davern led the Mustangs at the plate, going 2-for-4, with a double, triple, run scored and RBI, while Napoleon and Gonzalez each hit home runs for Monroe.

The Mustangs will look to extend their two-game winning streak when they wrap up their weekend road trip in Hagerstown, Md. when they take on Hagerstown Community College in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
