NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., April 12, 2018 – The Monroe College baseball team played its final two regular season games against Region XV foe ASA College on Thursday at Flowers Park. The Mustangs' late comeback bid fell short in Game 1, as the Avengers claimed a 4-3 win, but Monroe bounce back with a 6-1 victory in the day's finale, clinching a regular-season series win against ASA. Monroe moves to 19-8 on the season with the split, and finished 4-2 in Region XV play, while ASA goes to 13-10 and 2-4 in Region XV.

Game 1: ASA 4, Monroe 3
ASA got on the board first in Thursday's opener after loading the bases in the bottom of the third. Miguel Medina ripped a single into left with one away, scoring Louis Winter to make it a 1-0 game. The Mustangs then escaped trouble by turning an inning-ending double play.

The Avengers put runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth when Jesus Tejada hit a single into center field, scoring Siri-Jacob Ramirez from second and putting ASA up, 2-0.

Dilson Vasquez singled with one away in the seventh, then moved to second on a wild pitch. Rohandry Javier then singled up the middle, bringing in Vasquez to make it a 3-0 lead for ASA. He was later singled in by Medina, pushing ASA's lead to 4-0.

Back-to-back walks in the top of the eighth put two runners on for the Mustangs to start the inning.
Iasid Bernal then hit a grounder to third, but
Marquis Orozco managed to evade the tag, loading the bases for the Mustangs. A wild pitch then brought Orozco in to score, cutting the deficit to 4-1. With runners on second and third and two outs,
Shadrach Meulens smacked a double down the left-field line, scoring two more runs to make it a 4-3 game.

ASA starter Luis Sanchez Tejada picked up the win to improve to 4-0 after tossing seven scoreless innings. Ruben Cabrera picked up his second save by getting the final four outs.
Moises Robles took the loss after throwing seven frames and allowing three earned runs.

Meulens hit 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Mustangs in Game 1.
Edwin Feliciano Jr. batted 1-for-4 with a run scored. Orozco scored a run and stole a base after walking three times.

Game 2: Monroe 6, ASA 1
With two outs in the top of the first, Bernal hit a single over the second baseman, and then
Lenyn Napoleon drew a walk. Meulens kept his big day going, dropping a double down the right-field line to bring in Bernal and make it a 1-0 game.
Kevin Garcia then hit a grounder to second that was thrown over the first baseman, allowing Napoleon and Meulens to score and make it a 3-0 game.

A walk and an error put two runners on for ASA in the bottom of the sixth. With the runners on second and third, Medina grounded out to first, bringing in a run to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Bernal drew a two-out walk in the top of the seventh to keep the inning alive. Napoleon then drove a long fly ball off the left-field fence, good for an RBI double to make it a 4-1 game.
Edgardo Bernard later then reached on an error to second, scoring Napoleon from third to give Monroe a 5-1 edge.

The Mustangs loaded the bases with one away in the eighth. Bernal then ripped a single to left, scoring
Gustavo Gonzalez to make it a 6-1 game.

Francisco Urena did not allow an earned run in six innings and struck out nine batters to pick up the win and improve to 3-1 on the year. ASA starter Bryan Delgado shouldered the loss to fall to 2-1.

Bernal hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in Game 2. Meulens batted 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Napoleon finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, two runs and a double.

The Mustangs hit the road this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders at UConn-Avery Point, beginning on Saturday, April 14. Game 1 on Saturday is scheduled for 12 p.m.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall of 2017.
