Frias’ Gem, Orozco’s Seventh Inning RBI Lift Monroe Baseball to 1-0 Victory over Rowan Gloucester

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 27, 2018 – Behind a brilliant pitching performance by Antonio Frias and an eventual game-winning RBI single by Marquis Orozco in the bottom of the seventh, the Monroe College baseball team picked up a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rowan College at Gloucester County Tuesday afternoon at Dick Caswell Field. The Mustangs improve to 11-5 on the season with the win, while the Roadrunners drop to 12-2.

The Mustangs broke a scoreless tie with a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Abner Vincenty kept the inning going with a hit into center field. Joel Paulino then hit a grounder into the hole for a single to get two runners on. Orozco then ripped a liner up the middle, bringing pinch runner Ryan Hartigan home from second to give the Mustangs the lone run of the game.

Frias went seven frames on Tuesday, allowing no runs on just two hits with eight strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the season. Jason Alvarez came on to toss the final two innings, keeping the Roadrunners off the board for his third save of the year. Ryan Murphy took the loss for the Roadrunners after giving up the leading run in the seventh.

Orozco went 1-for-3 with the game-winning RBI in the seventh. Lenyn Napoleon hit 2-for-4 in the game. Vincenty and Juan Torres both batted 1-for-3, while Joel Paulino batted 1-for-2.

Monroe gets back to work on Thursday, March 29, when they hit the road to visit Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
