MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., March 14, 2018 – The Monroe College softball team earned its most decisive victory over the 2018 season on Wednesday, defeating Genesee Community College by a score of 17-0, forcing an eight-run rule finish after five innings in the Mustangs' fourth day at the Ripken Experience. Monroe improves to 5-6 on the season with the win, while Genesee drops to 0-4.

Monroe got off to a hot start with six runs in the top of the first.
Chantel Winstead kicked off the scoring with a two-RBI triple to center, scoring
Breanna Kuhner and
Brooke Boechler.
Kimberly Zapata later brought her in with an RBI single, and
Veronica Casanova was later able to score on a wild pitch.
Brianna Casiano then hit an RBI double to left to score Zapata, and
Brooke Kane capped things off with an RBI single to leave Monroe up, 6-0.

Zapata added an RBI triple in the top of the second to make it a 7-0 lead for the Mustangs.
Selena Aguirre then singled her in, leaving the Mustangs up, 8-0.

In the third, Winstead got the scoring going once again with an RBI single that scored
Brianna Martinez from second. Zapata then managed to bring in two runners on a sacrifice fly, giving the Mustangs an 11-0 edge in the third.

After a couple scoreless innings, the Mustangs got right back to work in the top of the fifth.
Alexis Cruz got a chance to pinch hit with two runners in scoring position, and she came through with an RBI single to make it a 12-0 game. Zapata then smacked an RBI single, followed by an RBI single from Aguirre to make it a 14-0 lead. Kane added another run on a single to center, and then
Kortney Semper drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in another. Kuhner finished things up with an RBI single up the middle to make it 17-0.

Kane improved to 2-3 on the season after going the complete five innings and allowing just two hits to earn the win. Genesee starter Sam Tatarski dropped to 0-2 after giving up 17 runs.

Zapata finished with an astounding five RBIs after going 3-for-3, adding a triple and two runs scored. Winstead knocked in three runs and scored three more after going 3-for-5 with a double and a triple. Kuhner went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Aguirre hit 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Casiano went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Kane batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Thursday, March 15, will be the Mustangs' final day down in Myrtle Beach. They will wrap things up with an 11 a.m. contest against Camden County College, followed by a 3 p.m. game against USC Sumter.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall of 2017.
