NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 24, 2018 – In a first-time, intra-campus matchup at the Monroe Athletic Complex, the Monroe Mustangs women's basketball team defeated the Monroe Express, 78-13, Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs finish the season with a 17-11 overall record.
 
The Mustangs took full control of the game from the jump when Amani Williams opened the game with a three-pointer. The Mustangs locked down on the Express on defense, leading to a 23-0 advantage after the first quarter.
 
Briyanna Graham got the Express on the board with a jumper at the 9:04 mark of the second quarter. Jada Banks then drained a jumper from the free-throw line at the 4:53 mark. Frances Morales followed with a three for the Express, but the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run close out the half with a 33-5 lead.
 
The Mustangs continued their run into the third until they made 26 straight points to take a 51-5 lead. The Express managed to make a couple threes down the stretch, but the Mustangs took a 62-13 lead into the fourth. The Mustangs outscored the Express, 16-0, in the fourth quarter.
 
Williams led the Mustangs with 17 points, while Jada Banks registered 15 and Cristina Soriano added 13. Mercy Amechi led the team with 17 rebounds, while Lisana Burnett and Tatiyana Parker grabbed nine, Soriano and Jessica Degree pulled down eight and Banks picked up seven. Soriano led the team with six assists.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall 2017 season.
