Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Wraps up Weekend with 63-60 win over Baltimore City

BALTIMORE, Md., December 2, 2018 – The Monroe Mustangs women's basketball team wrapped up their weekend at the Baltimore City Community College Classic with a come-from-behind, 63-60 win over the host Panthers on Sunday.

The Mustangs got off to a hot start against the Panthers, reeling off the first 12 points of the game before Baltimore City got a bucket to cut Monroe's lead down to 10. Monroe led by as many as 14 in the first quarter before the Panthers rallied, closing the gap to just two, 19-17, at the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers continued their charge in the second quarter, tying the game on their first possession of the quarter and outscoring the Mustangs, 11-8, to take a one-point lead at the half.

Like the Mustangs in the first half, the Panthers opened the second half on a run, opening up a seven-point lead with 5:38 to play in the third.

But the Mustangs responded with a run of their own, and Shanice Graves gave the Mustangs their first lead of the second half with 3:57 to play in the third. Baltimore City however, responded and took a two-point, 44-42, lead into the fourth quarter.

It wouldn't take long though for the Mustangs to reclaim the lead. Aneisha Lyons tied the game and gave the Mustangs the lead her and-one to open the fourth, and the Mustangs never trailed the rest of the way, making their free throws to hold off late Panthers charge to pick up a 63-60 victory.

With the win, the Mustangs move to 8-2 on the season, while the Panthers drop to 5-3.

Lyons led the way for the Mustangs with 22 points, adding nine rebounds and six steals, while Courtney Irabor also scored in double-figures with 16.

Monroe held the Panthers to just 34.2 percent shooting in the second half, and just 2-for-10 from beyond the arc, while outrebounding Baltimore City, 54-44.

The Mustangs are back in action when they return home to the Monroe Athletic Complex to take on Hostos Community College on Dec. 11 at 8 p.m.
