NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 18, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team closed out its first home tournament of the season, the Monroe Classic, with a 57-37 victory over Naval Academy Preparatory School on Sunday. The Mustangs improve to 4-1 on the season with the win.
The game got off to a slow start, but the Mustangs managed to take 6-5 lead midway through the first quarter. The Rams took an 8-6 advantage, but the Mustangs closed out the frame on a 6-0 run to take a 12-8 lead into the second.
The run continued in the second, as the Mustangs scored another four to go up, 16-8. A slow quarter again saw Navy Prep score the next seven, sending the game to the half with the Mustangs up, 16-15.
The game was tied up at 18-18 early in the third, but a 6-2 run put the Mustangs up, 24-20. Later, a three by
Trayvell Jenkins gave Monroe a 30-24 advantage. With the Mustangs up six late in the period,
Aneisha Lyons hit a pair of free throws to send the game into the fourth with a 34-26 score in favor of Monroe.
Another long ball by Jenkins early in the fourth put the Mustangs ahead by 11. The Mustangs slowly improved upon the lead, and five straight points by Lyons made it a 17-point game with just 3:05 left on the clock. The Mustangs went on to score the last five points of the game to pick up a 20-point victory.
Lyons had her second big game of the weekend, finishing with 19 points in the win.
Phyness Baldwin added 11 points and a team-high five assists. Jenkins added nine points off the bench after going 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Devon Adams pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
The Mustangs will play again next weekend when they compete in the Jim Brown Classic, hosted by Hagerstown Community College. The Mustangs will open the weekend on Saturday, -Nov. 24, with a matchup against host Hagerstown. Tip-off is scheduled for 11 a.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
