Monroe Mustangs Men’s Basketball Improves to 4-0 with Victory over Clinton in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, Md., November 17, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team led from buzzer to buzzer on Saturday in an 87-65 victory over Clinton College on the second day of the Baltimore City Community College Legends Classic. The Mustangs improve to 4-0 on the season with the win, while the Golden Bears drop to 2-3.
 
The Mustangs immediately jumped out to an 8-1 lead on the Golden Bears, and never looked back in Saturday's contest. The lead grew to nine points after a three-point play by Mouhamadou Gueye made it a 17-8 game with 13:43 left in the first half. A run by the Golden Bears cut the deficit down to five, but a 9-2 run gave the Mustangs a 32-20 advantage with 7:04 on the clock. The Mustangs closed out the first half with a 46-33 advantage.
 
Juan Felix Rodriguez led the Mustangs with eight points at the break. Gueye added seven points, while Deng Bol Yol and Will Martinez each had six after 20 minutes.
 
The Mustangs immediately pushed their lead to 16 with a layup by Ebrima Jassey Demba less than three minutes into the new half. An 11-0 run for Monroe gave the Mustangs a 76-49 advantage with just seven minutes to go. The lead hit its greatest point when the Mustangs took an 85-56 lead with just 3:50 to play, and the Mustangs held on in the final minutes to win by 22.
 
Martinez finished up with a team-high 17 points in the win, added four assists and four boards. Thomas Binelli picked up 15 points off the bench, making the only two three-pointers of the game for the Mustangs. Bol Yol just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Mustangs will close out their weekend on Sunday when they take on Monroe Community College in their final game at the Baltimore County CC Legends Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
