Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pair of Double-Doubles Lift Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball over Montgomery-Rockville

ROCKVILLE, Md., November 11, 2018Courtney Irabor and Aneisha Lyons both registered double-doubles to fuel the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team's 80-69 victory over host Montgomery College-Rockville on Sunday in the Mustangs' final matchup of the Montgomery-Rockville Tip-Off Classic. The Mustangs leave the weekend at 2-1 after winning both of their games, while the Raptors fall to 2-2.

Irabor finished with a game-high 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Lyons scored 11 points and pulled down 10 boards for one of her own. Lyons added five assists, while both had a pair of steals and one block apiece in a pair of impressive efforts on Sunday.

The Raptors managed to grab a 9-6 lead early in Sunday's contest. Irabor then drained a three off an assist from Lyons, erasing what proved to be the Raptors' final lead of the day. The three kicked off a 9-0 run that put the Mustangs ahead, 15-9. Montgomery got within four at 21-17 with 1:18 left in the first quarter, but the Mustangs scored the final three points of the period to take a 24-17 lead into the second.

Monroe's lead fell to four early in the new frame, but another nine-point run improved the Mustangs' lead to 13. The Raptors got the better of a slow back-and-forth for the rest of the half, but the Mustangs held a 37-27 lead heading into halftime.

The Mustangs' lead steadily grew as the third quarter carried on. They went up by as many as 20 points after a layup by Phyness Baldwin with 4:45 to go in the third frame, and hit that 20-point lead a few more times throughout the third, but the Mustangs took a 60-42 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Raptors opened up the fourth with six straight points to draw within 12, but a long ball by Shanice Graves halted the home team's momentum. The Raptors made it an 11-point game with 3:53 to play. The Mustangs were able to slowly tack on to their lead to eventually go up by 18 with just 2:04 on the clock, and were able to stave off a late run for an 11-point victory.

Baldwin, Graves and Jozai Vazquez each registered eight points in the win. Baldwin added five assists and five boards. Treyvell Jenkins and Ty-Tiana Parker both added six points, while Parker grabbed eight rebounds. Devon Adams scored five points and pulled down seven boards.

The Mustangs will play next on Saturday, Nov. 17, when they host the Monroe Classic at the Monroe Athletic Complex. They open the weekend on Saturday at 4 p.m., when they take on Monroe Community College.
