NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 18, 2018 – The No. 4-ranked Monroe College women's soccer team found success in its home opener on Thursday, blanking previously unbeaten Essex County College by a score of 3-0 at Skidelsky Field. Monroe improves to 9-0-1 on the year with the win, while the Wolverines fall to 8-1-1.
Finally playing in front of the home crowd, the Mustangs' leading scorer had to get the party started.
Maria Santin netted her team-high 17th goal in the 21st minute off an assist from
Yolanda Albalat, giving the Mustangs an early 1-0 advantage.
Monroe doubled its lead in the 37th minute. Albalat crossed the ball from the right wing over to
Angie Ponce to the left of the net, where she fired back to the right corner of the goal and past the keeper to make it a 2-0 lead for the Mustangs, a lead they took into the halftime break.
The Mustangs picked up where they left off early in the second half. In the 53
rd minute, Albalat sent a ball from midfield down the right sideline, setting up
Laia Munoz Danon to take it the rest of the way, beating the keeper to the left of the net to make it a 3-0 game.
Marta Alemany picked up her first shutout of the season to improve to 9-0-1 on the year in net. Nicolette Craig made 13 saves but allowed three goals to fall to 8-1-1.
