MELBOURNE, Fla., January 3, 2018 – The Monroe College men's basketball team went off for 72 second-half points on Wednesday en route to a 119-102 victory over Miami Dade College as part of the Eastern Florida State College New Year Classic at the Titan Field House. The Mustangs jump to 10-6 on the year with the win, while the Sharks drop to 10-7.
Clythus Griffith netted a team-high 23 points off the bench on Wednesday while going an impressive 13-of-14 from the free throw line and 4-of-4 from the field. Coming off a season-high 38 points on Tuesday, Jhery Matos followed up his impressive performance with a double-double, including 20 points and 11 rebounds in just 19 minutes on the court. Thomas Binelli totaled 16 points and eight rebounds in the win. Nukoy Singleton finished with nine points and matched Griffith for a team-high three assists. Andre Morgan, Damont Kearse, Clifton Tracey and Ebrima Jassey Demba all matched Singleton's nine points.
The Mustangs will close out their week in Florida on Thursday, Jan. 4, when they take on Palm Beach State College in one final contest at Eastern Florida State College's Titan Field House. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall of 2017.
