No. 9 Monroe Women’s Soccer Falls on the Road at No. 1 Tyler Junior College

TYLER, Texas, September 21, 2017 – The No. 9-ranked Monroe College women's soccer team took a long trip down to Tyler, Texas this week for a pair of games, starting with top-ranked Tyler Junior College Thursday. The Mustangs dropped a 5-1 decision to the Apaches in a tough battle with the nation's top team.
 
The Mustangs got on the board first in Thursday's contest when Juliana Pires scored off an assist from Yolanda Albalat to take a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. The lead did not last long, as Tyler's Jullia Trabach scored five minutes later to tie things up at 1-1. Debora Maciel netted one more for the Apaches in the 41st minute to give the home team a 2-1 lead at the break.
 
Trabach scored again for the Apaches in the 63rd minute to take a 3-1 lead. Kim Campos added one for the home team in the 74th minute to take a 3-1 lead, and then Trabach scored her third of the day to reach the eventual final score of 5-1.
 
Goalkeeper Oriana Palacios falls to 1-2 on the year after making four saves on Thursday. Tyler keeper Andrea Neves got the win after stopping five shots.
 
Pires scored Monroe's lone goal on the afternoon, while Albalat provided the assist. Pires and Gema Fernandez matches with a team-high two shots on goal, while Albalat and Angie Ponce joined them with three shot attempts apiece.
 
The Mustangs can put the loss in the rear view quickly, as they play next on Friday, Sept. 22, against Northeast Texas Community College. The game is set to kick off at 12 p.m. EST.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
