No. 16 Monroe Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Northampton for Fifth Straight Win

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 19, 2017 – The newly-ranked No. 16 Monroe College women's volleyball team kept its momentum rolling on Tuesday, as the Mustangs defeated Northampton Community College in three sets at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Monroe improves to 7-2 on the year, while Northampton falls to 11-2.

After some back-and-forth play early on in the opening set, the Mustangs went on an eight-point run to take a 12-5 lead. Monroe pushed the lead out to 21-10 to force the Spartans to use their second timeout. Both teams traded points from that point on, leading to a 25-14 win in the first frame for the Mustangs.

Monroe quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game, but the Spartans later got back within one at 4-3. Monroe then tallied six-of-seven to take a 10-4 advantage, and then a six-point rally put the home team up, 16-5. The Mustangs continued to hold a big lead the rest of the way, taking a 25-11 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Northampton had its best start of the night in the third set, going stride-for-stride with the Mustangs to reach a 7-7 tie. The Mustangs then turned things around, scoring five of the next six points to take a 12-8 lead. The Spartans rolled off the next four points to tie things up, but the Mustangs found their rhythm once again to score eight in a row and claim a 20-12 edge. Monroe had match point before Northampton added two more points, but the Mustangs finished it up with blocks by Brianna Chin and Marissa Hackett to close out the final set with a 25-15 win.

Nerealice Quirindongo led the Mustangs with nine kills and hit an impressive .615 on the evening. Keyshla Laureano Perez added seven kills and eight digs. Hackett contributed three kills and three blocks. Nashally Eleutiza picked up a team-high 11 digs, while Alexis Baer led all players with 18 assists.

The Mustangs will head down to Jacksonville, Fla. this weekend to compete in the Florida State at Jacksonville Tournament. Monroe will take on four teams across Friday and Saturday in the tournament, and will then travel to Florida Gateway College in Lake City, Fla. Saturday evening for its fifth match of the weekend. The Mustangs start things off on Friday, Sept. 22, with an 11 a.m. match against Palm Beach State College, followed by a 4 p.m. contest against No. 1-ranked Miami Dade College.
