Selden, N.Y. – The Monroe College Baseball team got a pair of home runs from
Michael Crispino and
Shadrach Meulens in a 7-4 loss to Suffolk County Community College on Wednesday. The pitchers allowed just two earned runs in the game.
The Sharks scored a pair of unearned runs off of Monroe starter
Harry Colon in the first inning. As has become a common for the team this season, they showed a lot of heart and came from behind to take the lead with three runs in the sixth.
After the first two batters were retired, Crispino connected on a solo shot to left to get the Mustangs on the board. Monroe then got two runners on when
Troy Davern and
Isaiah Torres were hit by pitches. They each moved up a base on a wild pitch, and Davern tied the game at 2-2 when the catcher misplayed strike three, allowing Meulens to get on and letting Davern and Torres advance. With runners now on the corners,
Marcus Espinal gave Monroe the lead on a single to right that plated Torres. Suffolk regained the lead in the bottom of the inning by scoring twice to go up, 4-3.
Suffolk then extended their lead to 7-3 with three unearned runs in the seventh. Monroe fought back once again with a run in the ninth. Meulens blasted the second homer of the game for the Mustangs, but Suffolk held on for a 7-4 win.
Xavier Bilodeau was pinned with the loss and now sports a 2-3 record. Colon,
Edward Nunez, and
Francisco Urena all combined to throw six innings and surrendered just two unearned runs.
The Monroe College Baseball team is now 15-19 overall. They will host Brookdale Community College in a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
