Lincroft, N.J. – The Monroe College Baseball team jumped out to an early lead, squandered the advantage, and then came from behind twice before succumbing to Brookdale Community College, 7-6, on Tuesday. The team is now 13-16 on the year.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a
Wayne Roberts leadoff triple and an RBI sacrifice fly from starting pitcher
Michael Crispino, who threw five innings of the match and did not factor in the decision.
Crispino surrendered a pair of runs in the second, but Monroe tied the score at 2-2 with an unearned run by
Dawy Lebron in the third. The Mustangs went up 3-2 in the fourth. After three walks by Jersey Blues pitching,
Carlos Torres scored on a wild pitch.
An inning later, Brookdale scored three times to regain the advantage at 5-3. They got three hits and a steal of home to account for the runs.
Monroe came from behind once again in the sixth.
Shadrach Meulens led off with a single. He got to second when
Isaiah Torres walked.
Carlos Torres tried to get a sacrifice bunt down, but the pitcher misplayed it for an error, allowing Meulens to score and both Torreses to move up a base. An
Edgardo Bernard ground out plated
Isaiah Torres and tied the game at 5-5. A Lebron single to left scored
Carlos Torres and put Monroe ahead, 6-5.
The Mustangs' bullpen was unable to hold the lead, and Brookdale got unearned runs in the eighth and ninth to pull ahead for a 7-6 win.
Manuel Pizarro was tagged with the loss, and is now 1-2 on the season.
The Monroe College Baseball team will return to action on Wednesday, April 19th, at 3:30 PM against Rowan College at Gloucester County in Sewell, New Jersey.
