New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Women's Softball team had a strong weekend, winning four out of six games on a road trip through two states. The team swept its series against Cumberland County and CCRI, but lost two games to County College of Morris. The Mustangs are now 12-8 for the season.
The Mustangs took the opener on Friday against Cumberland County 16-1; they won the second game as well, 21-0.
Yeisy Cruz was 4-4 with 5 RBIs in game one, while
Breanna Kuhner added three hits and drove in three.
Brooke Kane gave up one run on three hits to get the win. Kuhner drove in a pair with an RBI double in the first. Cruz doubled home a pair in the third, and
Jasmine Guerra earned two RBI with a base hit in the fourth.
In game two,
Taylor White had four hits, scored three runs, and drove in three. Kuhner had a homerun and four RBIs.
Toni Harris also hit a homerun in the game.
The Mustangs then faced Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) on Saturday. Game one saw Monroe come from behind to defeat CCRI, 7-3. The CCRI Knights took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Mustangs got a run back in the top of the fourth on a
Veronica Casanova RBI. They would take the lead in the sixth.
Kyle Bitz and Kuhner opened the inning with a pair of walks. Gabriella Placencia walked to load the bases. Casanova brought in Bitz with a ground out. Guerra followed with a two-RBI single that put Monroe ahead, 4-3. The Mustangs held the lead after Bitz drove in two with a double and
Toni Harris added an RBI single in the seventh.
Game two saw the Knights take the lead once again after scoring an unearned run in the third. The Mustangs would tie the game in the fifth.
Taylor White singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and reached third on a sacrifice bunt. Placencia brought her home with an RBI sacrifice fly. CCRI took the lead immediately with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead 3-1.
Aguirre advanced Monroe to 3-2 on an RBI hit that plated Harris, who had singled. The Mustangs took the lead for good in the top of the seventh. Trailing 3-2, Placencia tied the game with a single that scored Taylor. Monroe won, 4-3, following after Kuhner brought in Cruz.
The only two losses for Monroe came in a doubleheader against the County College of Morris. The Mustangs fell in 6-1 and 3-0 in the two games, respectively.
The Monroe College Women's Softball team returns to action on Friday, April 14, when they face Mercer County College at home in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
