New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Men's Basketball team closed out their regular season with a 71-49 victory over LaGuardia Community College on Thursday.
Tyler Ancrum,
Jarron Chapman,
Hampus Ahlin,
Dani Koljanin, and
Felix Carlsson were honored prior to the start of the game.
The Red Hawks took the lead early in the game, but Monroe took control after a Chapman basket at 8:46 put the team ahead, 14-13. That bucket was part of a 14-0 run that made the score 24-
13 for the Mustangs. Ancrum,
Clifton Tracey,
Christopher Burkley, and
Mouhamadou Gueye all contributed to the run. A jumper from
Damont Kearse Jr. gave the Mustangs a 14-point lead, their largest of the half. They led at the break, 35-26.
The Red Hawks fought back early in the second half and pulled within seven points. An Ancrum three-point-play with 15:22 left put the Mustangs up 46-35, after which the lead never fell below double digits. A Carlsson three-pointer put them up
16 points, and the ensuing possession ended with a Chapman dunk that drew thunderous applause from the crowd. A
Bryan Assie layup with
8:33 remaining gave the team its largest lead of the game at 22 points. They went on to win, 71-49.
Chapman led the team with 12 points.
Tracey followed with 11, and Koljanin added 10. The win was Head Coach
Jeff Brustad's 396th at the helm of the Monroe College Men's Basketball team, which is now 20-10 on the season.
