Monroe Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 4 Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., December 28, 2017 – In its opening contest at the Tallahassee Democrat Holiday Classic, the Monroe College women's basketball team fell to host and No. 4-ranked Tallahassee Community College, 93-59, Thursday evening. The Mustangs fall to 8-6 on the year, while the Eagles remain perfect at 14-0.
 
In the first quarter, the Eagles flew out to a 10-0 lead out of the gate, eventually rolling to a 26-6 advantage by the end of the period. The Mustangs found a rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring their hosts, 24-22, but were trailing at the half by a score of 48-30.
 
The home team pushed its lead out to 26 points during the third quarter, but the Mustangs made a short rally late, and trailed, 67-44, heading into the fourth. The Eagles outscored Monroe, 26-15, in the final frame, to claim a 93-59 win.
 
Amani Williams led Monroe with 16 points on the evening, adding seven rebounds to her night. Lisana Burnett scored 10 points and picked up six rebounds, while Shanice Graves matched her 10 points. Jessica Degree narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine boards.
 
The Mustangs will wrap up their trip to Tallahassee on Friday, Dec. 29, when they challenge No. 5 Northwest Florida State College. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall 2017 season.
