Monroe Women’s Basketball Crosses Century Mark in Victory over Erie

ROCKVILLE, Md., December 16, 2017 – The Monroe College women's basketball team surpassed the 100-point plateau for the first time this season on Saturday, picking up a 105-56 victory over Erie Community College in the Mustangs' first contest in the Montgomery College Holiday Tournament. The Mustangs improve to 7-5 on the year, while Erie falls to 1-10.
 
The Mustangs controlled the game right from the jump, scoring the first six points and eventually rolling out to a 22-4 lead midway through the first quarter. Both teams finished the period with 10 more points apiece, leaving Monroe up, 32-14, heading into the second frame.
 
Monroe pushed the lead to as much as 23 points on two separate occasions in the second, first on a three by Phyness Baldwin, and again moments later on a three by Amani Williams. The Mustangs finished up the half with a 48-26 lead over the Kats.
 
The Kats got back within 19 points early in the third quarter, but Monroe turned things right back around with a 9-0 run to take a 60-32 lead. The Mustangs closed out the third with the final six points of the period, taking a 73-38 advantage into the final stanza.
 
The Mustangs kept rolling in the fourth, scoring 11 of the first 12 points to go up by 45. At the 7:04 mark, Monroe started a 10-point rally to take a 53-point lead, it's largest of the game. The Mustangs surpassed the century mark on a layup by Tatiyana Parker at the 1:28 mark, and rolled to a 105-56 final.
 
Williams led the Mustangs with 20 points on the afternoon, adding three rebounds and three assists. Baldwin was close behind with 19 points, as well as five assists and four boards. Shanice Graves provided 13 points, five rebounds and a team-high six assists off the bench, while Mercy Amechi led all players with 14 rebounds on the day, adding seven points. Lisana Burnett and Samantha Hines also got into double-figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
 
The Mustangs will look to win the Montgomery College Holiday Tournament when they face off with the winner of Montgomery and Community College of Philadelphia on Sunday, Dec. 17. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall 2017 season.
